Sports in Charlotte, North Carolina

If anyone is a basketball fan, they know how big the Charlotte Hornets are in the NBA. Despite not being the best team in the league, they do have some redeeming qualities that make them quite interesting. They have bright team colors, cool merchandise, and they are owned by the legendary basketball player Michael Jordan. They were originally called the Charlotte Bobcats, but they later changed their name to the Hornets in 2014 by the request of Michael Jordan. Another sport that is quite popular in Charlotte is golf. In the Springtime, their marsh like environment lends itself beautifully for playing golf due to the beautiful green golf courses that can be found all around the city outside of the metropolitan region. There are several golf courses located in the city, and many are a part of a country club. They are scattered all around the city, and some of the notable ones are the Cedarwood Country Club and Quail Hollow Club. However, if you don’t want to pay the high membership fees of these country club, you can still play at public golf courses near the wildlife, such as the one located near Renaissance park. While basketball and golf are the two more popular sports in Charlotte, there are a couple smaller sports teams that aren’t as well recognized. For example, the Charlotte Checkers are a professional hockey team that plays in Bojangles’ Coliseum, which is owned by the popular fried chicken chain restaurant Bojangles. Additionally, the Carolina Panthers are an NFL football team based in midtown Charlotte. Due to the large sports presence in Charlotte, it is a popular activity for university students to go to sporting events with their friends during the weekends. Learn more about Charlotte here!
