Home Sleep Study

In addition to an in-office airway evaluation for signs of sleep-disordered breathing, Charlotte Center for Cosmetic Dentistry can help suggest home sleep study options for a more thorough assessment of sleep apnea. Unlike traditional sleep studies that require a patient to spend a night or two in a hospital or lab setting with wires and sensors attached to their bodies, our patients will receive a single device to wear in the comfort of their home and return to our Charlotte office the next day. In most cases, traditional sleep studies are not effective because patients typically have a hard time sleeping in an unfamiliar environment, especially with cameras, sensors, and other devices observing their every move. We offer a home sleep study device that is comfortable as it is worn like a headband. The device monitors that patient's pulse rate, airflow, snoring levels, respiratory effort, head movements and sleeping position, as well as blood oxygen saturation. The information is used to identify obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). For more information on sleep apnea, visit nhlbi.nih.gov.

OSA is a harmful sleep disorder that occurs because the airway is closed intermittently due to excess muscle and tissue at the back of the throat, a large tongue, enlarged tonsils, or obesity. Periodically cutting off the airway causes a person to take in significantly less oxygen and suffer through inadequate sleep cycles, even if they are not aware that they have OSA.
