What is the Difference Made by CariFree?

Charlotte Dental CariesAt Charlotte Center for Cosmetic Dentistry, we are committed to providing our patients the best overall care possible. In pursuit of this goal, we partner with a company calledĀ CariFree, from whom we obtain state-of-the-art products to help us diagnose and treat you better. We believe in complete dental care for the best overall oral health and use a system called CAMBRA (Caries Management By Risk Assessment) to assess health and prescribe a wide range of resources for our patients.

What are Caries?

Dental caries are the professional term for tooth decay. In their initial stage, caries look like white spots on the teeth that canā€™t be brushed away. At this stage, caries can be treated and prevented through non-invasive methods, such asĀ ICONĀ orĀ MI-Paste. As caries progress, they become visible holes which get larger when left untreated. We provide a number of treatments for caries, including fillings andĀ crowns.

Total Health Approach

Patients with dry mouth and those who are prone to recurrent caries benefit from our total health system. Using the CariScreen Caries Susceptibility Meter, we can assess caries risk through analyzing the patientā€™s oral bacteria. Certain bacteria have been proven to correlate with risk for caries and through analysis we can identify if the patient has a large number of these bacteria. We also use a Caries Risk Assessment Form, through which we can determine if a patient is at high risk for caries and formulate a plan to help prevent them.

Dry Mouth

Patients with dry mouth are particularly susceptible to caries. This is because saliva plays a large role in keeping teeth healthy through balancing pH in the mouth, supporting the remineralization of teeth, and protecting the body from microbes. When patients have dry mouth, the role saliva plays is reduced and the teeth are at a higher risk for decay. Dry mouth can be caused by stress, poor diet, age, heredity, disease, and medications and is more common in women than men. Here at Charlotte Center for Cosmetic Dentistry, Dr. Broome keeps an eye out for patients with dry mouth and will work with them to keep their mouths healthy.
